Interesting post! We sure have changed our notions of the virtual. Thanks for reminding me of Ethan Vogt's excellent Machinima, too.

At the recent Siggraph there was much talk of the "virtual pipeline" for previz. Autodesk is 100% behind this idea.

I would LOVE to see/read a "where are they now" series!

I would like to add dearest Olibith to the list! I always enjoyed the machinima from Olibith, Pink Hair and Baron Soosdon (who I think maybe is working at machinima.com these days?).

I've not been keeping track of the machinima scene and would love an update!

Of course! How could I not include Machinimag - but I am sure I missed quite a few of them. Also: I remember mprem. There are some captures of it over at archive.org but it was more of a collection of news, right? Anyway, along to way to look for mprem I also bumped in shattered keyboard by bllius (see above!) and as one of those blogs on machinima that have diversified into all kinds of animation and film topics it represents the "other" direction those blogs took (apart from fading away).

We had/have Friedrich Kirschner Machinimag site:
http://machinimag.com/
And there was the very active site 'Machinima Premiere' as well mprem.com, that is unfortunately no longer online. Don't know if it is archived somewhere.

Thanks for the mention (Machiniplex). I was thinking that there was a couple really good blogs back then...can't remember them all though. I think Phil Rice once posted a list of archived sites. If I come up with anything I'll post it here.

The genre fits so well with this indeed, I would love to produce many more films of this kind because it really does speak to the target audience and yes deliver a call to action.
We used Second Life because of the bright look of the platform, the virtual assets we can obtain here, custom made and otherwise which coupled with good looking avatars makes for this cool PSA.
And by all accounts the kids are really responding to the film!
Appreciate this very much!
